Healing Isn't Pretty

Life has a way of taking us through unexpected highs and painful lows. Along the way, many of us develop a deep desire to feel healed—to finally feel whole again.

When we imagine healing, we often picture a day when everything simply feels better. We hope the hurt will disappear, the difficult emotions will fade, and life will somehow return to normal.

But when that doesn't happen, we often become frustrated with ourselves.

We wonder:

"Why am I still struggling?"

"Why can't I just move on?"

"Shouldn't I be over this by now?"

What we don't often imagine is just how much work healing actually requires.

Healing Can Be Exhausting

What if I told you that healing can be emotionally and physically exhausting?

Just as our bodies need time, energy, and patience to recover from physical injuries, our minds and hearts need those same things to recover from emotional wounds.

Healing isn't comfortable.

Sometimes it's painful.

Sometimes it's messy.

And sometimes it asks us to do the very things we've spent years trying to avoid.

Healing often requires us to sit with difficult emotions instead of pushing them away.

To acknowledge painful memories rather than pretending they never happened.

To challenge beliefs we've carried for years.

To let go of perspectives about ourselves, others, and the world that once protected us but no longer serve us.

This is why the phrase, "Healing isn't linear", rings so true

Healing isn't a straight line from hurt to happiness.

It's a process.

One that includes progress...

setbacks...

growth...

grief...

hope...

and learning to keep moving forward anyway.

Understanding what healing truly looks like helps us release unrealistic expectations.

And when we let go of those expectations, we make room for compassion instead of criticism.

Healing Isn't Pretty

Have you ever had one of those truly ugly cries?

The kind where tears won't stop falling...

your chest hurts...

your stomach aches...

your face is covered in tears...

and yes...

probably snot too.

As uncomfortable as it sounds...

Healing can look like that.

Everyone's healing process is different.

Sometimes healing looks like...

  • Crying more than usual.

  • Setting boundaries that feel uncomfortable.

  • Feeling angry, frustrated, or deeply sad.

  • Needing time alone.

  • Choosing healthier ways to cope.

  • Spending a day in bed because your mind and body need rest.

  • Letting go of beliefs that no longer serve you.

  • Slipping back into an unhealthy coping strategy before finding your footing again.

Healing isn't always graceful.

Sometimes it's messy.

Sometimes it's uncomfortable.

Sometimes it's simply surviving another day while continuing to choose yourself.

And that's okay.

Gentle Reminders While You Heal

As you continue your healing journey, remember:

  • You can be healing while you are still hurting.

  • Be kind to yourself. You're trying to grow.

  • Try not to judge yourself for where you are today.

  • Give yourself permission to take the time you need. Healing doesn't have a deadline.

  • Avoid comparing your journey to someone else's. Comparison often delays healing rather than encourages it.

  • Progress isn't measured by perfection

Even though healing isn't easy...

It is worth it.

Healing allows us to release beliefs, behaviors, and patterns that no longer serve us.

It creates space for peace.

For growth.

For hope.

For becoming the person you've always been beneath everything you've had to survive.

So remember...

Healing isn't supposed to be easy.

It isn't supposed to happen overnight.

But little by little...

moment by moment...

step by step...

Healing happens.
